British Columbia Mountaineering Club: Watersprite Trail - Construction and Trail Building, Squamish, BC
The BCMC is a group of like-minded individuals who participate in outdoor activities. The club organizes mountaineering, rock climbing and back country skiing trips throughout the year. They offer courses to members and represents the interests of mountaineers and back country skiers in British Columbia.
Jordan and I are very involved volunteers of the British Columbia Mountaineering Club. I took a dedicated role in running their outside events section, where we both got to represent the club and meet new potential members at really cool outdoor movie and climbing events. Before doing this, we helped with the execution of a new BCMC hut near Watersprite Lake in Squamish BC. We both helped manually build the trail with several other volunteers and several tools, helped with the construction of the inner parts of the cabin - particularly the upstairs walls, created the art and design for the signage throughout the entire trail and inside the cabin, and partook in mounting the signage throughout the trail. We also always helped with clean up and took several bits and pieces back down to the cars. To be involved in such an awesome project and watch it get completed was, for lack of better words, an incredible feeling of accomplishment. The guys and girls behind this project put nothing but their hearts and sweat into this for several summers using a lot of their “free time” to hike up to the cabin (7km one way) and work on completing it before summer was over. It was amazing to work beside these people with such dedication. The cabin is now completed and taking in campers making money for the club and providing protection and future stability for the surrounding land of Watersprite Lake.
Get out and volunteer!
